The Prevention Awareness through Youth Support (PAYS) Coalition is inviting the community to take a stand against drug use by participating in Red Ribbon Week from October 23-31. The annual event aims to raise awareness about drug-related issues in the community while promoting healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

The week-long celebration began with proclamations from Baxter County Judge Kevin Litty and Mountain Home Mayor Hillrey Adams, as well as Marion County Judge Jason Stumph and Flippin City Mayor Heith Hogan. Both counties declaring support for and encouraging all community members to participate in drug prevention education activities.

PAYS Coalition Chairman Carry Manuel says, “Red Ribbon Week encourages our entire community to adopt healthy, drug-free lifestyles. The campaign brings together parents, schools, and businesses as we look for ways to keep kids and communities drug-free.”

Red Ribbon Week was established in 1988 by the National Family Partnership in honor of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in 1985. The red ribbon symbolizes a nationwide commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs.

Manuel says, “Research shows that children are less likely to use drugs when parents and role models consistently oppose drug use.”
