Modern gun deer season kicks off this Saturday in north central Arkansas, running through Dec. 1. An additional holiday hunt is scheduled for Dec. 26–-28, with some wildlife management areas remaining closed.

Hunters can bag up to five deer this season, with a limit of two antlered bucks and three antlerless deer, including button bucks. Button bucks, counted as antlerless, must be checked as such and don’t affect the buck limit in north central Arkansas zones.

In Zones 2 and 6, covering parts of Baxter, Marion, Boone, Searcy, Newton, Stone and Izard Counties, hunters may encounter collared or ear-tagged deer as part of a research project. These deer are legal to harvest, but hunters are required to call 833-289-2469 within 12 hours of tagging and checking a research deer.

Dogs are allowed for deer hunting in Zone 6, including southeastern Searcy, southern Stone, and southern Newton Counties. They are prohibited in other north central Arkansas zones.
