Pinkston Middle School Honor Students with KTLO’s Sammy Raycraft

Honor students from Pinkston Middle School will conduct a mock trial with a local retired judge Friday morning at the Baxter County Courthouse.

The mock trial is based on a scene from the book The Outsiders. The scene the trial is based on involves a character killing another character to defend his friend. The trial is convened to determine whether or not he is guilty of manslaughter.

Caleb Stephens, Presley Mayfield, Zakk Leach and Bently Schreccengost, students participating in the trial, spoke with KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News to discuss what the mock trial has helped them learn. Stephens says to help better understand the legal system, some alterations to the original story had to be made.

Each student will have a role to play in the courtroom as a hands on opportunity to learn courtroom proceedings. Retired Judge Chris Carter will preside over the case.

Leach and Mayfield say taking the lesson out of the classroom is an exciting way to expand their knowledge about how the legal system functions

Before the mock trial, the students had studied the book and were each assigned a character to analyze as they read. They kept notes of character traits, friendships and crimes.

Stephens and Leach say the mock trial will really bring the studies they have made on the characters to life.
