Landowners interested in learning how to utilize prescribed burns for habitat management will have an opportunity to gain certification at a two-day Qualified Burner Class hosted by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The event will take place December 5 and 6 from 9 until 5 at the Charles R. Newton Emergency Training Services Building in Mountain Home.

The course aims to develop private landowner conservation leadership by providing hands-on education about prescribed burns, including safety measures, ignition techniques, weather considerations, firebreaks, and fire as a management tool. A live fire demonstration is planned, weather permitting, and attendees will take a test at the conclusion of the course.

The class is free and includes lunch on both days. Space is limited to 25 participants, and interest has been high, with the course already half-full after just one day of registration. Upon completion, participants will earn certification as Qualified Prescribed Burners under Act 695.

This initiative is part of the Arkansas Outdoor Skills Network, which offers programs that connect participants with natural resources and outdoor skills such as hunting, fishing, and conservation management.

Registration is open to landowners of varying experience levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Participants are encouraged to act quickly due to limited availability.

For more information about the course or to register, contact the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
