The Boone County Regional Airport has received a $7 million federal grant to construct a new terminal, marking a significant upgrade to its infrastructure.

According to a report from KYTV, construction is set to begin in fall 2025, and the new terminal will support nonstop flights from Harrison to Dallas. The highly competitive funding, typically awarded to larger commercial airports, positions Boone County Regional as one of the first general aviation airports to secure such a grant.

Airport Manager Judy McCutcheon says, “Our existing terminal is 58 years old, and this grant allows us to build a modern terminal to meet today’s needs. This will also be an airport that future generations of private pilots and passengers in our community will proudly use.”

The Federal Aviation Administration grant will fund a 7,100-square-foot terminal, replacing the outdated facility that no longer meets accessibility, capacity, or energy efficiency standards. The new terminal will feature modernized waiting areas, conference rooms, expanded parking, and enhanced spaces for rental car agencies, airline counters, and a pilot’s lounge. Upgraded landscaping and an improved exterior design are also planned.

The airport currently offers $79 flights with 18 weekly round-trip flights between Memphis and Dallas-Fort Worth. Demand for these routes has consistently exceeded capacity, reflecting the airport’s growing importance. Passenger enplanements at Boone County Regional Airport have risen by 32% since 2014, underscoring the need for the expansion.

This development is expected to enhance the travel experience while meeting the needs of a growing community and aviation market.
