Dr. Mackercher remembered for service to medical profession, local community

A local physician is being remembered for his service to the medical field and various other organizations in the Twin Lakes Area. Dr. Peter Mackercher II died Monday at the age of 78.

Dr. Mackercher was originally from Oklahoma and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1964. He received his bachelor’s degree at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo, four years later. Dr. Mackercher would then attend medical school at the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a gastroenterology fellowship.

Dr. Mackercher became a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy and served for two years at the Navy Hospital in Great Lakes, Ill. He later relocated to Mountain Home and began a 40-year medical practice at Baxter Health. He would serve in several leadership capacities in the medical field.

In addition to his medical career, Dr. Mackercher was involved in the local community. From 1995 to 2001, he served on the advisory council of Arkansas State University-Mountain Home. He also served on various boards, including for youth soccer and his church.

Funeral services with military honors for Dr. Mackercher will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 at Fellowship Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A graveside service will follow at Baxter Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5 to 7.

He is survived locally by his wife, Ellen; one daughter, Rachel Mackercher; one son, Peter Mackercher III; and two of four grandchildren, Malachi and Kale Mackercher-May of Mountain Home.

The family asks for donations to be made a favorite charity. Dr. Mackercher’s favorite charity was the Twin Lakes Community Foundation.
