Mammoth Spring man dead after being partially ejected from pickup truck

An area man is dead after he was partially ejected from the pickup truck he was occupying early Sunday morning in southern Missouri. The unidentified 25-year-old Mammoth Spring resident was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-vehicle accident in Oregon County more than an hour after the crash occurred. The driver, 54-year-old Robert Powell of Thayer, was transported to Ozarks Healthcare in West Plains with serious injuries, and he’s facing a felony count of driving while intoxicated resulting the death of another.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Powell and his passenger were traveling on Missouri Highway 142. They were nearly seven miles northwest of Myrtle when the truck ran off the roadway and overturned, causing the Mammoth Spring man to be partially ejected.

Neither occupant of the truck was wearing a seat belt. The passenger’s death is the 23rd fatality reported by Troop G this year, compared to 33 at the same time in 2023.

The truck was totaled in the 12:28 a.m. accident.
