The charges against a man reported to have threatened to kill his father were dismissed during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court on December 2.

Nineteen-year-old Jakob Leonard McFarland had been charged with aggravated assault on a family or household member.

Despite what had happened during the incident, McFarland’s father appeared during an earlier court session to ask that the no contact order in place to keep father and son apart be lifted. Circuit John Putman asked both parent and child if everyone was going to be safe if the order was no longer in place. Both said there would be no problems.

Baxter County sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the Promise Land area in late September 2023. The victim said a verbal argument had broken out that allegedly resulted in McFarland going to his truck, getting a 30-30 rifle, cocking it and pointing it at his father’s chest.

He is reported to have verbally threatened to kill his parent.

The father got on the phone to call the sheriff’s office, and the son took the gun and left the residence. McFarland was reported to have contacted the sheriff’s office later and asked to meet with deputies. He was taken into custody. McFarland has been free on $5,000 bond.
