MHHS girls win Billy Ply Memorial Tournament, boys finish 3rd

The Billy Ply Memorial Tournament came to an end Saturday at Flippin came to an end with one of Mountain Home High School’s basketball teams taking home a championship trophy.

The Lady Bombers captured the title in a high-scoring 83-69 victory over Bergman. It was a hard fought battle in the first three quarters as both teams put up a lot of points. The Lady Panthers were up one at halftime and five at the end of the third period, but Mountain Home dominated the final quarter as they outscored Bergman 23-8 for the win.

Laykin Moore led the Lady Bombers with 19 points, Brooklyn Mitchell scored 16, Jayla Yonkers had 15, Livi Fosness recorded 13, and Anna McCarn added 12 points. Brynlee Collins finished with 18 points for the Lady Panthers, and Jacey Halitzka and Taryn Holt ended up with 14 each.

Mountain Home improves to 6-2 on the season, and their next game will be Wednesday as they meet the Oklahoma Flame on the opening night of the Red Dog Invitational at Springdale.

Flippin’s girls ended up in fourth place. The Lady Bobcats fell to Bentonville West 48-37.

In the other girls’ games, Highland squeaked by Southside Batesville 55-53 in the fifth place game, and Thayer, Mo., pounded Harrisburg 66-20 for seventh place.

The Bombers finished third on the boys’ side as they got past Flippin 63-60. Mountain Home had built a double-digit advantage in the first half and went into the locker room up 14. In the second half, the Bobcats mounted a few comebacks, but the Bombers held them off each time and eventually picked up the three-point win.

Mountain Home was led by Blaine Tate with 25 points, Jackson Corp scored 14, and Ryder McClain chipped in 10. For Flippin, Rilyn Robbins had 25 points, and Tucker Thompson recorded 12.

The Bombers are now 4-4 on the year, and they’ll travel to West Plains on Tuesday as the two teams play for the Battle of the Border trophy.

Lake Hamilton captured the boys’ title with a 49-44 win over Chadwick, Mo. Highland won the fifth place game over Shiloh Christian 69-57, and Harrisburg was seventh with a 55-46 victory over Lake Hamilton’s junior varsity squad.
