A treasured piece of Baxter County history is getting some much needed attention in order to keep it preserved for the future. During a recent session of Baxter County Quorum Court, an ordinance was passed to set aside $100,000 to assist with renovations to the Casey House.

Built in 1858 by Col. Randolph Casey, the Casey House stands at its original site and has withstood significant historical events, including the Civil War, a destructive tornado in 1985, and decades of wear and tear.

Beyond its role as a family home, the Casey House served as Baxter County’s first courthouse and has housed various owners and renters since its sale in 1909. The county acquired the property in 1971 to preserve its historical significance. Restoration efforts over the years have included the installation of a protective fence in 1976 and repair work around the turn of the century.

Despite these efforts however, Kevin Bodenhamer, President of the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society, says there is still a lot of renovations the house needs in order to preserve it for generations to come.
