The Arkansas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) has announced award recipients for 2024 and the city of Marshall is getting money to put in a new traffic signal and crosswalk for students at Marshall High School to be able to safely cross U.S. Highway 65. The city was awarded $499,000 for the project which will give Marshall its third traffic signal.

Marshall Mayor Kevin Elliott says it’s a big need because the school is on one side of the highway, the fast food restaurants are on the other and it’s extremely dangerous for the students to have to cross five lanes of traffic between school and extracurricular activities.

Elliott says he asked the state to check how many students were crossing the highway to see the importance of the crosswalk.

The button will be active 24 hours a day. Otherwise, the traffic light will always be green for motorists according to Elliott.

The $499,000 won’t cover the entire cost of the project, but the Marshall mayor says the school district is covering the difference.

The project will benefit other residents of Marshall as well according to Elliott.

Elliott says they hope to have the project complete by the time school starts next August.

He says for next years’s TAP awards, they plan on applying to get funding for a sidewalk for the south side of U.S. 65.
