Winter is less than a week away from beginning, and many wonder the likelihood of having snow or other wintry mixes this season. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, a mainly mild and dry winter is expected for Arkansas with the best possibilities for snow in late January and early and late February.
Since its founding in 1792, the Old Farmer’s Almanac has predicted long-range weather forecasts throughout North America. According to the Almanac, its original editor, Robert B. Thomas, used a complex series of natural cycles to devise a secret weather forecasting formula, bringing results traditionally claiming to be 80% accurate. However, other studies show its accuracy rate at 52%.
In Arkansas, the season is expected to be approximately two degrees warmer than average, with colder spells in late January into early February and late February. Overall, precipitation during the winter is also predicted to be above normal. A season of rapid-fire storms is expected to bring rain and snow to the state.
