A new bill in the works aims to increase safety for Arkansas teachers and students by focusing on violent behavior in classrooms.
House Bill 1062, otherwise known as the Teacher and Student Protection Act of 2025, will ensure that students who exhibit violent or abusive behavior are not in classes with the teacher or student they harmed.
If passed, the bill states that while a case is being reviewed, students will be placed in an alternative learning environment where the will still have to follow school discipline policies but without being in the same environment as the victim.
In addition, if the behavior is linked to a disability, the student will be transferred to an appropriate educational program with parents and educators deciding the best course of action.
According to HB 1062, students who have three or more instances of violent or abusive behavior in a school year could be placed in an alternative learning environment for the remainder of the school year, or even face expulsion.
The bill defines “violent or abusive behavior” as actions such as physical abuse or making harmful threats.
