The Mountain Home High School basketball teams ended up with mixed results, and another milestone was hit by one of their student athletes in makeup games Monday at Russellville. Matt Sharp has the details.
Listen:
Brooklyn Mitchell was able to hit 1,000 points for her career before the Lady Bombers defeated the Lady Cyclones 72-54. Russellville, who normally struggles to score, came out firing as they outscored Mountain Home 20-15 in the opening quarter. The Lady Bombers’ offense picked up more in the second period, and they went into the locker room with a five-point halftime lead. Mountain Home pulled further away as Livi Fosness’ inside presence dominated the second half, and they eventually went on to win by 18.
Fosness led the Lady Bombers with 27 points and 13 rebounds, Jayla Yonkers scored 13 points, and Laykin Moore added 10. Jasmine Garcia had 17 points for the Lady Cyclones, and Kaira White provided 10.
Mountain Home improves to 19-3 on the season and 5-1 in the 5A-West. Russellville falls to 6-16 and 1-5.
The Bomber boys’ quest for their first conference win came up short as they fell to the Cyclones 54-50. After Mountain Home tied the game at 5-5, Russellville took over. The Cyclones had a 10-point lead at the break built it as high as 13 in the third quarter. Mountain Home seemed energized in the final period when head coach Josh Fulcher was assessed a technical foul, and Russellville’s Cade Smith was charged with an intentional foul. Rhett Gilbert exploded for 16 points in the final quarter and led a run of 11 straight points to give the Bombers their first lead of the night. However, Mountain Home was unable to score another point as the Cyclones took the lead back, and Malaki Siner put the game out of reach at the free throw line with about five seconds left.
The Bombers were led by Gilbert’s 22 points as he went 10-for-10 at the charity stripe, and Ryder McClain chipped in 13. Zay Williams provided 12 points off the bench for Russellivlle, and Kevin Foster finished with 11.
Mountain Home drops to 10-12 overall and 0-6 in the league. The Cyclones are now 18-5 and 4-2.
The Bomber teams return to the Hangar on Friday as they wrap up the first half of conference play with a matchup with Greenwood.
