Norfork School Board highlights student achievements, adjourns after 3 hour executive session

The Norfork School Board convened for its monthly meeting on January 29, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Board members addressed a range of topics, including student achievements, curriculum updates, and future projects.

The meeting began with routine approvals. Shannon Moody motioned, seconded by Chad McGowan, to accept the minutes from the previous month and a special meeting, which passed unanimously. Stephanie Free then motioned to approve the current month’s bills and prior month’s financial reports, also seconded by McGowan and approved unanimously.

Student and School Reports

Noah Shaw, a student representing the Sr. Beta Club, gave a report on the group’s upcoming trip to the National Beta Competition, highlighting their preparations and excitement for the event.

Elementary Principal Stacey Bradbury shared updates, noting that K-2 ATLAS screenings have been delayed by the state but are expected to resume in the spring. A co-op team recently visited to discuss a technical plan for addressing dyslexia, while an instructional coach is supporting math teachers biweekly. The Jr. Beta Club shone brightly at their convention, earning an impressive 40 awards with 53 students participating. Additionally, the school’s archery program has 31 students across five teams, all of whom have qualified for the state competition. Pee Wee basketball is also in full swing.

High School Principal Jason Williams reported that basketball and bowling teams are in season, with tournaments starting soon. Baseball and softball are set to begin next month, and Norfork will host the regional tournament. Interim testing is scheduled in the coming weeks, and the high school is also benefiting from the math instructional coach. Williams attended the Superintendent Symposium, which emphasized growth and performance improvements.

Graduation and Legislative Updates

Board member McGowan highlighted the district’s impressive 95% graduation rate, which secured over $9,500 in funding. He credited the district’s focus on curriculum meetings and attendance incentives for helping drive these results.

On the legislative front, the board discussed pending bills, including a likely no-cell-phone-restriction policy, as well as numerous amendments and updates to current legislation. The board will receive monthly updates on legislative changes.

New Business

The board tabled a decision on purchasing a 35-horsepower school tractor to allow time for further review and to obtain solid bids. Additionally, they reviewed required board training updates.

Executive Session

The board entered an executive session at 6:48 p.m. to conduct a superintendent evaluation and returned to open session at 9:10 p.m. Moody motioned to adjourn the meeting, seconded by McGowan, with the meeting officially concluding at 9:10 p.m.
