An Arkansas priest has been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty after allegations that he trapped and drowned cats. Charles Thessing, 63, a priest at St. Michael Church in West Memphis, was charged on February 10, 2025, with two counts of animal cruelty. The charges stemmed from an investigation prompted by a tip from a concerned citizen.
In response to the charges, the Diocese of Little Rock announced on February 11, 2025, that Thessing had been suspended indefinitely from his pastoral duties at the church. The Bishop of Little Rock stated in a letter that following consultation with community members and careful prayerful consideration, it was determined that Thessing could no longer serve as an effective pastor. While acknowledging that Thessing had many supporters within the parish, school, and broader community, the bishop emphasized the need to prioritize the well-being of the parish.
The investigation was carried out by West Memphis Animal Services and the West Memphis Police Department. Authorities found evidence of animal cruelty during a search of Thessing’s home, where they discovered two deceased cats that appeared to have been drowned in a tank of water. Additionally, animal traps were found on the property.
Following his arrest, Thessing was released after posting bail. The investigation is ongoing, and the diocese has suspended Thessing’s duties pending the results of the legal process.
