Sen. Flippo addresses support for Senate bill to abolish State Library Board

With its passage in the Arkansas State Senate chamber last week, Senate Bill 184 became a step closer to becoming law and transferring the powers and duties of the Arkansas Educational Television Commission and the State Library Board to the Department of Education. District 23 Sen. Scott Flippo of Bull Shoals was among the 23 yes votes for the bill.

Sen. Flippo says he supports the abolishment the commission and the board in an effort to streamline government efficiencies while maintaining a “robust” library system.

A portion of Arkansans have challenged the idea of abolishing the library board, believing it gives legislators and others in Little Rock more control over individuals’ consumption in the state’s public libraries. Sen. Flippo says he understands that argument, but he doesn’t necessarily agree.

When it comes to the former Arkansas Education Television Network, now known as Arkansas PBS, Sen. Flippo claims the organization has been operated as a for-profit business.

Senate Bill 184 has to be approved by the House before it goes to the governor’s desk.
