Friday night’s storms caused abundant property damage in portions of Stone County. Two individuals had non-life-threatening injuries, but no deaths have been reported.

According to Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long, the county was placed under a tornado warning around 9, and a powerful tornado swept through the county less than an hour later. There were multiple reports of damaged property and downed power lines along with fallen trees blocking roadways in conjunction with damaged residences and vehicles. While the storm traveled through many parts of Stone County, there was a heavy concentration of damage and destruction in the Onia and Fifty Six areas.

Sheriff Long says deputies and emergency responders from multiple agencies have quickly responded and provided help to those in need. Work crews have been clearing roadways of fallen utility lines and downed trees all morning, and that work is continuing. Motorists should continue to use caution when driving in and around the areas impacted, and the public should be aware of the dangers of entering badly-damaged buildings and structures.

Deputies continue to be available to offer assistance as needed. Anyone with a friend or family member that is unreachable should contact the Stone County Sheriff’s at 870-269-3825 and provide information for law enforcement to check on their well-being.
