When former Briarcliff Mayor Martin Nicholson spoke to KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News after resigning during last week’s city council meeting, he had a lot to say about the state of the city, including the fact he has asked the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office to look into the city’s financials.

During the council meeting, as per state law, the council named Recorder-Treasurer Renate Schmitt Interim Mayor until the council can appoint a new mayor. Schmitt contacted KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot News this week to offer the other side of story.

Schmitt, who is in her third term as recorder-treasurer, says there has never been a problem with the city’s books since she has been in office.

Nicholson mentioned issues with the way the Briarcliff Improvement District (BID) Board of Directors operates. Schmitt says that is being addressed.

She says in the past, the city’s recorder-treasurer handled the accounting for the BID, but the BID is now getting their own treasurer and secretary in the coming months.

Schmitt says at this point, she is focused on moving forward and helping the city heal.

She says the next piece of business for Briarcliff is to find a new mayor.
