A bill has that can have an effect on the athletic eligibility of a student transferring to another school in Arkansas has become law. House Bill 1633 passed both chambers of the state legislature, and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ signature has turned the bill into Act 475.

Mountain Home Public Schools Athletic Director Mitch Huskey says the law basically puts the transfer rules back as they previously were for high school athletics.

The new law applies to public school, private school, charter school and homeschool students wishing to participate in a district other than where they reside. Students relocating to a new district will not be considered transfers and will meet the domicile rule as a resident student once enrolled.

Huskey says he doesn’t see the law having a significant effect on Mountain Home.

Huskey says he could see the law affecting the smaller schools in a positive manner, but he believes the biggest effect will be among some of the districts in the central and northwestern portions of the state.

If a school receives and stamps a student’s school choice paperwork before April 8, the previous law allowing transfers to be immediately eligible still applies. The new law affects transfers stamped after April 7.
