Local law enforcement agencies such as the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office and the Flippin Police Department are participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) National 420 Mobilization campaign.
During the campaign, which begins Friday and runs through the weekend, extra deputies and officers will be in the field with a focus on traffic enforcement and the detection and apprehension of impaired drivers.
In 2019, 49% of drivers killed in crashes who were tested for drugs had positive results. Marijuana can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance and make it more difficult for drivers to keep a steady position in the their lane. These dangerous behaviors can cause serious injuries or death in a crash.
The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office recommends anyone who plans to use drugs not to drive. Drivers should secure a designated sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare for a sober ride home. If a driver finds they are unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver. Anyone who spots an impaired driver should contact local law enforcement.
