With a new school election calendar in place for the 2018 election cycle, the filing period is already underway.

In 2017, the Arkansas legislature passed Act 910 moving the annual September school election to either coincide with the May preferential primary or the November general election beginning in 2018.

Baxter County and Circuit Clerk Canda Reese says the three school districts in Baxter County have elected to coincide with the May preferential primary.

Marion County Clerk Dawn Moffet says all school districts in Marion County have also elected to coincide with the May preferential primary.

Reese says those interested in running for a school board need to be gathering petition signatures.

Reese says while signatures for 20 registered voters who are residents of the school district are required for those seeking a school board seat, candidates are always encouraged to gather additional ones. She says inevitably some signatures will be found invalid.

Reese also notes with the 2018 election cycle approaching voters should be mindful of the state’s voter ID law.
