Another local school district in Missouri is considering switching to a four-day school week. The Gainesville School Board is expected to bring the topic up for discussion at its meeting next week.
Gainesville Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hyatt says the idea came from other Missouri schools, including Bakersfield and Dora, already taking part in the shorter week.

Dr. Hyatt says the proposal is not based on budgetary matters, but he also says there’s an average of school districts in Missouri and the United States that have switched to the four-day week saving 1 1/2 to 2 percent in operating costs.

With any major change to the manner in which a school or a business operates, there are always pros and cons to be considered. Dr. Hyatt says his main concern would be child care for the day classes would not be in session.

Dr. Hyatt says the district has polled local parents in an email survey, and the feedback they have received is mainly positive.

Residents of the Gainesville R-V School District will have a chance to learn more about the proposal when the board meets next Tuesday evening at 6:00 in the high school library. Anyone wishing to be added to the agenda will need to visit the central office at the high school and complete the required public comment forum.
