Paul Natkin/Getty ImagesIn the U.S., Corey Hart is usually thought of as the one-hit wonder who sang the smash 1983 hit “Sunglasses at Night.” Or maybe you think of him as a two-hit wonder, if you add “Never Surrender.” But in his native Canada, Corey Hart is kind of a big deal.
The singer will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the 2019 Juno Awards, airing March 17 from London, Ontario. The telecast will see him performing on live television for the first time in more than 20 years.
In a statement, Corey said, “It’s an incredible honor to be acknowledged alongside so many other talented and venerable Canadian artists. My career goal since the beginning has always been to remain one hundred percent authentic to my artistic vision while embodying the highest respect and dedication towards the craft I love so much…these are indeed very exciting times for me.”
Hart has sold over 16 million records worldwide and had nine straight top-40 singles in the U.S., plus 11 top-10s in Canada. “Sunglasses at Night” won the first-ever Juno Award for Best Video in 1984.
Most unbelievably, he was invited to screen test for the role of Marty McFly in Back to the Future, but said no, preferring to focus on music.
In 1999, Hart took a hiatus from touring and recording to focus on his family, but continued to work behind the scenes, producing songs for Celine Dion and starting a record label, among other activities. He’s currently planning to release his first new studio recordings and embark on his first Canadian tour in more than 20 years.
