The Cotter School District’s application for a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) safe room has been approved by the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and is now with FEMA. During Thursday’s Cotter School Board meeting, Superintendent Vanessa Thomas-Jones said FEMA decided to roll the project into this year with a pre-disaster mitigation funding notification by December. The district is looking at a 6,888-square-foot facility to house over 850 people.
In addition, Thomas-Jones’ contract was extended. Her contract now runs through the 2019-2020 school year.
In other items of business, the board approved awarding second semester food service bids to Tankersly, Sysco and Springfield Grocery; accepted Thomas-Jones’ recommendation to renew the school board legal liability and general liability insurance with BXS Insurance; approved eight student transfers to Cotter from Mountain Home and approved one transfer from Cotter to Mountain Home. Thomas-Jones also stated Before School Care will be a free service to all children enrolled at Cotter for the remainder of the school year.
