Sharp County attorney Tom Garner has taken the bench as a Third Judicial District circuit judge, following an appointment by Gov. Asa Hutchinson. The appointment follows the death of Circuit Judge Kevin King in January.
Garner is a 1978 graduate of Salem High School. He would go on to obtain his law degree in 1985 from the William H. Bowen School of Law at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Areawide Media newspaper reports Garner would work for Judge King early in his career before opening his private practice in Salem in the late 1980s.
With the governor’s appointment, Garner had to quickly shutter his law practice of 30 years. In addition, he had to give notice to his employer of 16 years, Third Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce.
