The Calico Rock Museum has received the 2020 Arkansas Museums Association’s (AMA) Award for Outstanding Achievement in Media. The AMA awards competition recognizes excellence within Arkansas museums and celebrates the accomplishments of their work.
“It is a great honor to be recognized among Arkansas’ best museums and to have our work, as a small museum from a rural community, awarded is very encouraging. We have worked very hard to keep our community informed, especially during the pandemic,” Gloria Sanders says. Sanders is the executive director of the museum and Calico Rock Community Foundation.
The Calico Rock Museum won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Media for an app produced for the community of Calico Rock. The app featured local businesses, helpful information for visitors and a virtual tour of the museum. Sanders says the app was most helpful during the pandemic when all museums and visitor centers were closed in the state on the governor’s orders.
The AMA Awards competition received numerous applications from a wide variety of museums in the state, including the Clinton Presidential Center, Museum of Discovery and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
“To be competitive, and win, in a field where museums with really large budgets and staff resources, it’s just a very high honor for our small town,” Mayor Greg Hamby says. “It just goes to show the treasure we have here in Calico Rock.”
The award winners were announced during the 2020 Arkansas Museums Association Annual Meeting held via Zoom earlier this month.
The Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center is located on historic Main Street in Calico Rock and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum has been involved in a major project to renovate three historic buildings on lower Main Street and move all of the museum into those buildings.
