Dora R III wins $2,000 in the 10th Annual National Red Ribbon Week® Photo Contest
$20,000 awarded to K-12 schools across America
DORA, Mo. – The results are in! The National Family Partnership (NFP) is proud to announce Dora R III is a National Red Ribbon Week® Photo Contest winner and is one of 20 K-12 schools across America to be awarded funds for drug prevention education.
Cosponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the annual contest invites families and schools across the country to decorate the fronts of their homes and schools with a double-looped red ribbon in order to create awareness about the importance of staying drug-free. In addition to the double-looped red ribbon, all photo contest submissions were required to incorporate the 2020 campaign theme, Be Happy. Be Brave. Be Drug Free.™
The winning contest photos either received the most votes in their designated region, or were selected by panel of judges. Dora R III had two contest winners – Bev Davison and Ginny Hall.
Each submitted photo received the most votes in their regions. Other contest categories included Most Creative, Best Use of Theme, Best Virtual Photo, Most Educational, Most Ambitious, Best Use of Family, Best Use of School or Virtual School and Most Creative School or Virtual School.
Bev Davison, a math and health teacher at Dora R III, submitted one of the winning photos on behalf of the school.
“My brother died of a drug overdose and struggled with drug addiction his whole life,” she says. “The Red Ribbon Campaign is a way to talk with our students and help them understand that it can happen to people we love,” she adds. “We may think this can’t touch our life, but it can.”
Ginny Hall, a communication art and reading professor at Dora R III, also won and received a Home Category award. “It feels really good to win!,” she says. “This is a topic that kids need to be more aware of. It is important for us to promote staying drug-free.”
All contest winners will also receive an Apple iPad.
DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was murdered in 1985, is the inspiration behind the Red Ribbon Campaign. The campaign and contest are reminders about the importance of staying drug-free, and the contest aims to engage communities in a fun and interactive way.
“Times like this allow members of the community to show off their creativity,” says Peggy Sapp, NFP President. “Coronavirus has shifted our way of life, but not our spirit. Thank you to all who participated.”
