A fire late Thursday night has destroyed a funeral home in Salem. The Barker Funeral Home is listed as a total loss according to Salem Volunteer Fire Department Chief Sam Rossitto.
Rossitto says they were paged out at 11:49 Thursday night after the Fulton County 911 Center received several calls from those passing by the building on U.S. Highway 62/412 on the western side of Salem. The first fire truck arrived six minutes later but the chief says the building was three quarters involved and there was nothing they could do to save it.
Chief Rossitto says their main concern was keeping the fire from impacting two large propane tanks next to the building, which they were able to do.
The chief says the cause of the fire is undetermined and no investigation is planned.
Firefighters were on the scene for just over five hours. Salem was assisted by the Byron and Camp Volunteer Fire Departments.
The Barker Funeral Home has been in business in Salem since 1993 according to their website. No details have been released concerning scheduled funeral services. Their website indicates one service was scheduled for Friday morning and one for Saturday.
