Less than a month after being involved in a motor vehicle crash, an area law enforcement officer has succumbed to his injuries. Howell County Sheriff Brent Campbell says 77-year-old Cpl. Michael Wall of Koshkonong was pronounced dead Thursday night.
According to the report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the three-vehicle collision occurred 1 mile south of West Plains on U.S. Highway 63 just before 5 p.m. on Dec. 27. A vehicle driven by 26-year-old Bailey Pine of West Plains struck the rear of another vehicle driven by 70-year-old John Eye of Mineral Point. Pine’s vehicle crossed the center of the roadway and struck Wall’s vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. Pine’s vehicle then traveled off the roadway and overturned.
Wall was transported to Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, where he later died. Pine was pronounced dead at the scene and was reportedly not wearing a seat belt. Eye was not injured in the accident.
Wall began his career with the Howell County Sheriff’s Office in March of 1997 and worked for almost 25 years. He has been a corrections officer and a transport officer, and he has served as a bailiff for the last 18 years in the Howell County Courthouse.
Wall is survived by his wife, his daughter, five grand children and three great grandchildren. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
