White River Firearms in Gassville recently donated two state-of-the-art sporter class marksmanship rifles to the Mountain Home NJROTC program for upcoming unit competitions.
The rifles arrived November 1, marking a major upgrade to the unit’s previous equipment, which was purchased in 1993 when the unit was established.
White River Firearms purchased Airforce Edge Rifles, a precharged air-chambered rifle, with personally adjustable buttstock, cheek rest, sight aperture, trigger pull, an ambidextrous safety, and a millimeter adjustment sight. These firearms allow each of the unit’s four competition shooters to make the rifle truly their own for more comfortable use during matches.
The Marksmanship program currently competes nationwide with other JROTC units and youth shooting clubs in 10 meter 3 position and 10 meter 60 shot standing competition. Targets are shot, electronically scanned, and scored before being sent to the hosting unit.
According to the unit’s leader, Chief Jason Williams, “being a part of the Marksmanship team teaches cadets precision, patience, and control, while providing a safe competition environment for the cadets to compete in.”
Williams noted that his unit is currently second in the NJROTC Elite Division and 10th overall out of 45 teams in the Orion Elite League. The unit’s next competitions are the NJROTC Secretary of the Navy Postal match, the Orion Elite Semi-Finals, and the American Legion Junior Shooting Sport Competition.
