A Stone County man has been arrested during a hunting trip for possessing firearms with prior felony convictions.
According to the probable cause affidavit, an Arkansas Game and Fish officer was patrolling along Pouge Springs Road and came upon an individual walking along the side of the road. The officer made contact and identified them as 54-year-old Dewayne Orvil Knight, who was wearing hunting clothes. Knight was asked by law enforcement if he was hunting and stated he was taking a walk to use the bathroom.
During the conversation, Knight told the officer he had killed a buck the day before with a crossbow, but admitted he had not checked it although he filled out a tag. The officer was able to confirm Knight had a valid hunting license, but found it odd he was not carrying a firearm with him. The officer proceeded to run Knight’s information and discovered he was a convicted felon and could not possess a firearm.
Law enforcement asked Knight if he hadn’t been hunting could he look at his gear he had on his person to verify he had no ammo or cartridges. Knight unzipped a hunting pouch which contained his cell phone. Also inside was a camo pouch where Knight allegedly told the officer it was meth.
Knight was arrested and placed into custody where a glass pipe, and 9mm handgun was discovered during a search, along with 22 cartridges in his pant pocket. He also told the officer he hid a 22 rifle behind the trees, which was located and secured.
Knight was charged with felony counts of simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of firearms by certain person, possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of drug paraphernalia. He is currently being held in the Stone County Detention Center on $50,000 bond.
