Residents in the Twin Lakes area interested in running for local school boards of education have just over two weeks before the window to file opens.

Beginning February 22, residents will be able to file for candidacy at the Baxter and Marion County Courthouses.

Arkansas State Law states to be eligible to run for school board, candidates must:

– be a registered voter in the school district and the electoral zone;

– must be a United States citizen;

– be a resident of the school district and if elected from zones, the respective electoral zone;

– must not be an employee of the school district served;

– must be lawfully registered to vote;

– must never have been convicted of fraud, embezzlement of public money, bribery, forgery or other infamous crimes.

According to the Arkansas State Law, the electoral zone requirements would only apply to the Cotter School District.

In Baxter County, candidates must have 20 valid signatures from electors within the district or zone they wish to represent.

The filing period for the May 9 election closes at noon March 1.
