Salem girls among 1st day winners in state tournaments

Two area high school girls’ basketball teams began action in the Class 3A State Tournament at Lamar.
Salem advanced to the quarterfinals with a 52-42 victory over Helena-West Helena. Chelsea Hamilton was the Lady Greyhounds’ top scorer with 24 points, and Marleigh Sellars provided 19. Salem improves to 27-4, and their next game will be Friday.
Bergman took another step toward successfully defending their state title from a year ago by topping Jessieville 61-52. Maddi Holt paced the Lady Panthers with 21 points, Ruby Trammell finished with 14, Kiersten Lowry ended up with 12, and Madeline Moon added 10 points. Bergman’s quarterfinal game will be Friday.

Three area teams took part in the opening day of the Class 1A State Tournament Tuesday at Ozark.
Mammoth Spring’s girls were able to put the mercy rule in effect as they pounded Guy-Perkins 70-27. The Lady Bears were led by Brynn Washam with 22 points. Mammoth Spring will play its quarterfinal game on Thursday.
The Omaha girls watched their season come to an end in the evening session. The Lady Eagles fell to Dermott by a final of 56-42.
Omaha was also one-and-done on the boys’ bracket. The last game of the night ended with the Eagles losing to Lafayette County 60-45.

In Missouri, Hollister’s girls were eliminated from the Class 4, District 11 Tournament at Mountain Grove. The Lady Tigers fell to the host Lady Panthers 57-42. Hollister finishes the season at 6-21.
