It was 1888 when the first Moose Lodge was established in Louisville, Kentucky, as a location for men to gather socially, to care for one another’s needs and celebrate life together. According to Moose International, the organization has since expanded to include valuable service to communities. The Mountain Home Moose Lodge No. 1953 is one of nearly 1,600 lodges throughout 49 states, four Canadian provinces and the United Kingdom.

Local Moose Lodge President Mark Weber says the location in Mountain Home is currently one of eight lodges in the state of Arkansas.

Membership dues at the Moose Lodge are $50 per year, and $38 go to Mooseheart Child City and School. The 1,000-acre campus is located nearly 40 miles west of Chicago, and it provides an education for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. According to Mooseheart’s website, the school’s curriculum includes career exploration at the middle school and evolves into vocational education at the high school level. Each Mooseheart student learns a vocation in addition to earning an academic diploma.

Another way funds are raised for Mooseheart is the annual Blessing of the Bikes put on nationally by the Moose Riders. Weber says this year’s event is scheduled for May 20.
