Baxter County Sheriff’s Office receives several reports of fraud in 1st 4 months of 2023

Through the first four months of the current year, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of fraud by local residents. To date, the office has had $32,500 in fraudulent cash activity reported, and Sheriff John Montgomery says that figure only represents the cases they know of.

The most recent report came in on April 17. Sheriff Montgomery says a citizen advised he had recently received a phone call from what was represented to be The Bank of America enquiring about investing. The citizen reported believed he was receiving a legitimate solicitation to invest funds with The Bank of America in Newport. It was discovered the caller was illegitimate and was allegedly perpetrating a scam, and as a result, the citizen lost over $2,000.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office is reminding citizens to be mindful of unsolicited calls, emails, prizes, etc. Suspicious activity can be reported by calling 870-425-7000.
