An inmate at the North Central Unit of the Arkansas Department of Corrections at Calico Rock has been charged after allegedly throwing urine on a corrections officer. Forty-six-year-old Richard Varnell picked up a felony charge of aggravated assault on a corrections officer and an enhancement of being a habitual offender.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the incident happened when the officer opened the door to Varnell’s cell to pick up his breakfast tray. When he did, Varnell threw a cup of urine on the officer. A supervisor was assisting the officer and grabbed the tray and other cups from the inmate to prevent him from throwing anymore liquids.
The officer was taken to the infirmary to be treated and decontaminated and then sent to the hospital for more tests.
Varnell is serving a 10-year sentence for aggravated robbery out of Washington County.
