A West Plains man has been sentenced to 180 months in prison for the receipt and distribution of child pornography.

The West Plains Police Department stated 53-year-old Gairry R. Bakken was sentenced in the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri on May 22.

In Feb. 2021, the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force responded to a cyber tip from the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children after Facebook observed files depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on its servers. Investigators linked the Facebook account to Bakken at his residence in West Plains.

In March 2021, a search warrant was served at Bakken’s residence and items capable of storing digital evidence were seized. The items were later observed to contain files depicting CSAM as well. In a post-Miranda interview, Bakken admitted he received files depicting CSAM on various social media applications.
