A man suspected of a hit-and-run and fleeing from law enforcement in Fulton County is in serious condition after being involved in a two-vehicle accident in southern Missouri. Forty-three-year-old Kyle Salamone of West Plains is at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield after being transported by air ambulance from the scene in Oregon County.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a deputy from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 63 with no front fender and front market lights missing on Wednesday. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the suspect, identified as Salamone, failed to stop leading to a pursuit.
Salamone led law enforcement down Union Hill Road where at one point he rear ended another vehicle by the Wirth Road turnoff. Another deputy joined in the pursuit and with his radar determined Salamone drive 107 mph by the Field Creek Bridge. Deputies lost Salamone on Britton Hill Road, but they were able to identify him during the pursuit. Deputies went to his residence where they were able to identify the missing fender from the vehicle, leaning up against a tree. Several neighbors were also able to confirm Salamone had been driving the vehicle matching the detached fender.
According to KYTV/KSPR, the Oregon County Sheriff’s Office says Salamone was spotted Friday night driving at speeds over 100 miles per hour. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash report shows the accident occurred around 10:45 when Deputy James Martin was chasing Salamone and made contact with his vehicle five miles north of Thayer on Highway 63. Salamone’s vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned. He was reportedly not wearing his seat belt.
Deputy Martin was not injured. His vehicle had minor damage, and Salamone’s vehicle was totaled.
Salamone is facing a felony charge of fleeing with a bond of $10,000.
