A man in the Baxter County Detention Center while prison space is unavailable is accused of throwing items out of his cell and attempting to cut his wrist with his fingernails after being told he was switching cells. Twenty-four-year-old Brennan McKenna of Midway is now facing a charge of impairing the operations of a vital public facility.
According to an incident report from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office, McKenna was told Wednesday he was moving to a different cell because an inmate with medical issues was potentially going to need his cell. McKenna reportedly became angry and argumentative. A jailer told him he had a few moments to get his items packed. When the jailer returned, McKenna had not packed until more jailers joined in. McKenna reportedly demanded to be placed in the cell with his cousin but was told that wouldn’t happen due to prior issues.
When McKenna was placed in his new cell, he allegedly kicked the door and started throwing items, including wet toilet paper at the camera. The items he was throwing were removed, and later, a deputy advised McKenna was attempting to cut his wrist with an item. Jailers went in and reportedly realized he was trying to use his fingernails. McKenna was placed into a restraint chair until he became calm.
In February, McKenna entered a no contest plea to charges stemming from an incident in which he was alleged to have inappropriate sexual contact with a relative. He was sentenced to five years in prison, with three suspended and two to serve, and will be required to be listed as a sex offender. McKenna is in Baxter County while awaiting space in the chronicaly-overcrowded state prison system.
