Two students from Mountain Home High School have been named 2023 Soybean Scholars.
Hadleigh and Hannah Baker of Mountain Home were named the scholars by the Soybean Science Challenge, which is a program funded by the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board.
The Bakers were named Soybean Scholars after completing six online classes and winning the Soybean Science Challenge award at the FFA Agriscience Fair Senior Division with a science project focusing on soybeans.
The Bakers’ project, measuring early soybean growth response to commercial fertilizer and turkey litter, focused on improving the efficiency of turkey production through the use of soybean fertilization. They found the soybean-based feed source led to the heaviest average weight for a single bird. The Bakers and their teachers Carson White and Josh Baker were given cash prizes totaling $300 for winning the award.
Julie Robinson, administrator of the Soybean Science Challenge and Associate Professor at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture states, “The Soybean Science Challenge is a unique opportunity to show students all agriculture offers their present and future. Participating students are given the opportunity to experience the everyday importance of agriculture in their lives, explore future careers in agriculture, and get a glimpse as to how they can impact the industry through research.”
The Soybean Science Challenge encourages Arkansas junior high and high school students to use soybeans and agriculture sustainability as the basis for their science fair project. In the process, students learn about soybeans and other current soil, water, seed, disease and insect issues that impact production outcomes and agricultural sustainability.
