The life of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt will be explored in a new seven part lectures series at the Donald W. Reynolds Library serving Baxter County. Lectures will be held every Tuesday starting October 3 and run through November 14.

Often credited with advancing the United States into becoming a world power in the 20th Century, the series will explore Roosevelt’s life from sickness in childhood through his climb to power as one of America’s toughest men in the Oval Office.

Lecture presenter, former professor at the University of Mississippi School of Law, Jim Carrol and former motion picture producer Peter Giuliano recently were guests on Talk of the Town to discuss the series titled “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

Jim Carrol: The Roosevelt that we’re talking about is Theodore Roosevelt, who was, became president in 1901. He was vice president when William McKinley was assassinated, and he became president. Accomplished an awful lot of things that we want to talk about in the classroom, but we’re going to talk about his early life, too.

Peter Giuliano: Hey, Jim, why don’t you tell people how he became vice president, why he became vice president? Well, he became, he became vice president because the New York mob wanted to get him out of New York to be the vice president so they could get something done, because the vice president didn’t really get anything done, they didn’t think.

Sammy Raycraft: Because he was governor at the time of New York.

Jim Carrol: Yes.

Sammy Raycraft: And a former police commissioner also, right?

Jim Carrol: Yeah. That’s correct.

Peter Giuliano: He was difficult for the establishment politicians to deal with.

Jim Carrol: Yeah, there were some people that couldn’t stand to be around him because he never would shut up.

Jim Carrol: Think about it. Theodore Roosevelt ushered America into the 20th century. He became president in 1901 and he was president basically for two terms. We’re going to talk about some of his accomplishments, but a lot of people don’t realize that Roosevelt was responsible for the acquisition of Hawaii. He was responsible for the acquisition of the Philippines.

Peter Giuliano: Built the Panama Canal.

Jim Carrol: He actually got a lot of things done strictly by the force of his personality.
