As we are nearly a month into the fall season, this is the time many will be paying attention to persimmon trees. Persimmon season normally runs from October to January, and many believe their seeds can be used for winter predictions.
Persimmons are berries from edible fruit trees native to China. Vicki Garner of Gardening in the Ozarks on KTLO-FM says the trees have been cultivated for thousands of years. She says persimmons were first introduced in 1870, and their popularity grew nearly 50 years later.
Listen:
Garner says throughout the United States and especially in the Ozarks, wild persimmon trees can be found.
Listen:
Garner says the shapes of persimmon seeds are intriguing to many around the country. Seeds can be extracted and cleaned of its fruit. Once the seeds are dried, they can be cracked open, though it’s a difficult process. When someone cracks open a persimmon seed, it can be seen in the shape of a knife, fork or spoon. Garner says the shape of the seeds can help predict what the winter season will be like in the area.
Listen:
Garner can be heard every Saturday morning at 10 during Gardening in the Ozarks on KTLO-FM.
