During the Mountain Home Public Schools Board of Education meeting Thursday night, the Commanding Officer and crew members of the USS Arkansas were presented by the Board with a plaque honoring them as honorary Bombers. Thursday marked the first day of their namesake visit, where they visited each campus and held an informational session for veterans and the public. Commanding Officer Alan Kahnke made a short presentation discussing how the partnership came to be and stated Commander Allan Hale reached out to him at the right time to make it happen.

At the end of the presentation, Commander Kahnke presented the Board with a plaque with the ship’s logo on behalf of the crew.

During reports, Junior High Principal Kyle McCarn presented information on how the community service requirements will be implemented. This new requirement added through the LEARNS Act will require students graduating in 2026-27 to complete 75 community service hours beginning in 9th grade. The task force has suggested 9th grade students complete 15 hours and 20 hours each year for grades 10 – 12. McCarn stressed these hours are not punitive but used for service learning.

In action items, the Board approved three students to be transferred into the district and 11 students to be transferred out.

The Board approved the purchase of a new 30-passenger Micro-Bird bus for Guy Berry College and Career Academy as part of a grant received in 2022-23. This will allow a bus the campus has been using to be placed back into the fleet. The bus is expected to cost $108,335, with a delivery date of 240-320 days from the receipt of the purchase order.

The Board also approved policy updates regarding funeral leave for certified employees. The PPC asked the Board to approve the update as they are trying to align their policies with those of classified employees. In addition, the CPPC requested for an old policy to be removed, as it was replaced and approved over the summer. Both policies were approved unanimously.

During announcements, Superintendent Allyson Dewey shared on November 2, from 5 until 6, there will be the facilities master plan community input meeting where the public can ask questions and provide suggestions. Following the meeting, there will be a training session concerning facilities for Board members. Dewey states the meeting will be open and held in the Administration Building Board Room.

November 6-14 is the candidate filing position for those interested in running for School Board, with the election to be held in March.
