An Izard County man was apparently worried about his ability to pass a field sobriety test, so he fled a checkpoint Friday night. Following a high speed pursuit, 63-year-old Charles W. Crider of Oxford was apprehended, and his worry was confirmed when driving while intoxicated was one of several charges he picked up.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Arkansas State Police troopers were conducting a sobriety checkpoint at the intersection of Arkansas State Highway 9 and Newburg Road south of Brockwell. Crider had been stopped to be checked, another car entered the checkpoint, and while officers were talking to that driver, Crider took off.

Crider drove off the road and crossed a ditch at the intersection of Chapel Hill Road and park his vehicle. Two troopers were able to quickly apprehend Crider without incident.

Crider is charged with a felony count of fleeing in a motor vehicle and misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated third offense, possession of an open container and driving while license is suspended. His bond is set at $5,000.
