A report of a man going around various locations in Calico Rock led to his arrest on suspicion of intoxication, and an Izard County investigator reportedly shot the man’s dog after it attacked. Twenty-three-year-old Jesse Sanders of Calico Rock is facing a felony count of aggravated assault and misdemeanor counts of public intoxication and unlawful dog attack.
According to the probable cause affidavit, a deputy responded Nov. 17 to a report of a trespasser on Second Street. The complainant claimed Sanders wouldn’t respond when told to leave the property. At that time, the deputy had already been dispatched to a report of Sanders acting suspiciously behind a motel. The deputy claims Sanders seemed to be mostly non-verbal but compliant at the motel.
The deputy made contact with Sanders again after the trespassing incident. Sanders was reportedly not combative but was stating he went to see the neighbors’ dog. A school resource officer had also been called to respond to Sanders after he had allegedly been lurking around the head start earlier in the day. The SRO stated he had observed Sanders appearing to be under the influence near the school and, knowing he lived close by, advised him to go home.
An investigator soon arrived on scene and began speaking with Sanders on his porch. Sanders reportedly appeared to be nervous, and his mannerisms appeared to be concurrent with someone under the influence of methamphetamine.
The decision was made to arrest Sanders for public intoxication, and he also reportedly violated his parole. Sanders then attempted to flee off the side of his porch, and a fight ensued. A pit bull came out but remained docile until Sanders said, “Get them! Get them!” The dog immediately became aggressive, charged and bit down on the investigator’s elbow. The investigator reportedly kicked the dog away, drew his firearm and shot the dog before it began charging him again.
Sanders was later transported to the Izard County Detention Center. A drug test was administered, and he tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine, benzodiazepine, marijuana and buprenorphine.
Sanders is also being charged as a habitual offender. He is currently being held without bond.
