The Mountain Home High School basketball teams began its run of four straight road trips with a split at Alma on Friday.
The Lady Bombers, currently ranked fourth in Class 5A by the Arkansas Sports Media, squeaked by the Lady Airedales 52-49. It was a game that stayed close throughout with 11 lead changes and seven ties. The last tie came when Alma’s Jaden Gramlich hit one of two free throws with 54 seconds left, but Mountain Home responded on the ensuing possession when Laykin Moore hit a jumper at the right elbow. The Lady Airedales’ next possession ended with Jordan Gramlich being called for traveling. Moore hit one of two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to extend the margin to three. Jaden Gramlich’s three-point attempt to tie the game was off the mark, and the ball sailed out of bounds. The Lady Bombers were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.
Moore led Mountain Home with 19 points, Jayla Yonkers scored 14, and Parker Huskey added 10. Jordan Gramlich had 20 points for Alma.
The Lady Bombers improve to 17-5 on the season and 6-0 to remain atop the 5A-West standings. The Lady Airedales fall to 7-15 and 1-5.
Mountain Home was not as fortunate in the boys’ contest as they fell to Alma 53-50. Ryder McClain came out firing as he scored 11 of the Bombers’ 15 points in the first quarter. The Airedales used a balance attack to take the lead in the second quarter. Alma began the final period on a 12-4 run to go up a dozen. Mountain Home followed with an 11-2 run. The Bombers had the ball down three in the last few seconds of the game, but they attempted a jumper inside the arc. The shot didn’t go, and the Airedales escaped with a three-point win.
Mountain Home was led by McClain with 19 points, Braiden Dewey provided 12, and Blaine Tate chipped in 10. Chris Salazar and Tyree McGill came off Alma’s bench to finish with 11 points each, and Easton Boggs ended up with 10.
The Bombers move into a tie for third place in the 5A-West as they drop to 16-6 overall and 4-2 in the league. The Airedales are now in sole possession of first place at 13-8 and 6-0.
Mountain Home will wrap up the first half of conference play on Tuesday with a pair of makeup games at Russellville.
In other 5A-West boys’ action, Harrison routed Siloam Springs 80-46, Greenwood defeated Greenbrier 54-47, and Russellville got past Van Buren 58-53. On the girls’ side, Harrison topped Siloam Springs 43-36, Greenwood pounded Greenbrier 79-23, and Russellville beat Van Buren 63-46.
