A 59-year-old woman who now lists an address in Wisconsin accused of fraudulently obtaining almost $20,000 in unemployment benefits appeared in Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday.

Linda Gladys Sadowski pled not guilty to a charge of theft of public benefits, a Class B Felony.

In mid-December last year, the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office received a referral for criminal prosecution naming Sadowski as the suspect from the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services.

It was alleged that in a period beginning in early June 2020 through late March 2021, Sadowski was collecting unemployment benefits and failing to report that she was working part time at a local business.

The law requires that claimants for unemployment benefits submit weekly reports showing whether they received any earnings during the period.

The reports are used to determine the benefit amount the claimant is entitled to receive.

Because she did not report her income, Sadowski received larger benefit checks than she should have.

The state is seeking almost $20,000 in restitution.
