Following primary Election Day on Tuesday, all political yard signs must be taken down by Sunday.

Mountain Home City Clerk Scott Liles reminds residents an ordinance updated in 2022, Ordinance 2022-44, allows residents to display political yard signs up to 60 days prior to an election and requires their removal within five days after the election.

A violation will result in a $25 fine, which compounds each day the overdue sign is still on display. The owner of the sign, the political candidate advertised, is responsible for the sign’s removal, meaning the candidate could also be ticketed.

Liles states, “People keeping their yard signs up past the deadline isn’t usually a problem, and potential violations can usually be addressed by a simple knock on the door or a phone call. Still, the City occasionally has to issue a violation for keeping a yard sign out too long.”

The one exception to the deadline are for candidates who will advance to a runoff election on April 2. These candidates may continue to display their signs, and then have five days after that election to remove them.

Yard signs for races to be contested on the November general election ballot may begin being displayed on or after Sept. 6.

Liles says, “The most common violation we see is when someone has a sign for a candidate with a primary race in the spring, and then that candidate also has a general election opponent in November. Some residents want to leave their yard signs for those candidates up all through the summer, but that’s not allowed. There’s a primary election season and a general election season, and the summer months should be sign-free.”
