Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston is asking the Arkansas General Assembly to double the number of state capitol police officers to provide security for buildings surrounding the capitol. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports there are currently 33 positions. And Thurston is requesting an appropriation for 34 new State Capitol Police employees. This year’s fiscal session started on Wednesday. The Arkansas House of Representatives and Arkansas Senate are scheduled to reconvene Monday afternoon.
